The Royal
Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam is launching an app, featuring historical
recordings dating back to 1926. The app will also enable users to watch
concerts with a 360 degree view, so they can experience them as if they were
sitting in the middle of the orchestra.
The app is
part of "RCO Universe", a new digital platform which the
Concertgebouw is launching to mark its 125th anniversary next year. Besides
concerts, the app will provide background information about the directors and
musicians as well as footage from backstage. According to the Concertgebouw,
it's the first orchestra in the world to set up a digital platform.
Worldwide
RCO
Universe is designed to interest a worldwide audience. According to the
orchestra's general director, Jan Raes, "young people in particular are
not very familiar with classical music".
The Concertgebouw
estimates the project will cost 1.25 million euros over the next four years.
The orchestra is asking individuals to make donations of 1250 euros to fund the
digital platform.
