Dutch online sales hit €3.6bn in Q1 - 22% of consumer spending

DutchNews.nl, Thursday 03 July 2014

(NOS/ANP)
Consumers spent €3.6bm buying goods and services online in the first three months of this year, according to online retail platform Thuiswinkel.org.

This is the equivalent of 22% of total consumer spending, Thuiswinkel.nl said.

In total, consumers made almost 26 million online transactions, of which three in four were for physical products like clothes and phones. Nevertheless, plane tickets and hotel stays accounted for the most money - €700m.

The research also shows over three-quarters of the Dutch made at least one online purchase in the first quarter of the year.

This is the first time the organisation has published quarterly figures but they would appear to show an increase on last year. In 2013, the Dutch made almost 100 million online purchases with a total value of €10.6bn.
