London (AFP) - #YouAintNoMuslimBruv became Britain's top trending Twitter hashtag Sunday after a passer-by shouted the dismissive remark at a knife-wielding man in a London Underground station.

Police are treating Saturday's attack at Leytonstone Tube station in east London as a "terrorist incident".

In video footage, an onlooker is heard shouting "You ain't no Muslim, bruv" as the 29-year-old suspect, reeling after being hit with an electric stun gun, is pinned down and handcuffed.

The dismissive retort was the top trending hashtag in both London and the whole United Kingdom.

Twitter user Arcanequaint called it "the most British response to a terrorist attack ever".

Another called Russburt wrote: "One man does more for community cohesion with one sentence than any government initiative."

Another called Muthla said: "Best trend I've seen -- YouAintNoMuslimBruv regarding horrific attack in Leytonstone. Gotta love London for the trend!"

Sociologist Craig Morris wrote: "One sentence pushes away extremists and unites everyone else. This is our stance now. Great."

Chris Lowndes said: "YouAintNoMuslimBruv is just perfect -- real, inclusive, undermines terrorist cause."

Twitter user Jackie Nn wrote: "youaintnomuslimbruv -- so proud to be a Londoner. True Muslims don't try and kill innocent bystanders. Peace to true Muslims."

The male voice heard on the amateur mobile phone footage said: "You ain't no Muslim, bruv! You're no Muslim, bruv! You ain't no Muslim!"

Onlookers also shouted "Drop it, you fool", referring to the knife, and "Who is this idiot?".

One eyewitness told the BBC that people barracked the suspect as police led him away and one person threw a bottle at him.

Twitter user Kellie O'Gara wrote: "Can we make Youaintnomuslimbruv the new battle cry against terrorism? No guns, no bombs, no threats. Just those five words."

Writer Will Black said: "This should be played on tannoys across Daesh (Islamic State) gang areas and dropped on posters from planes."

San Francisco (AFP) - Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg announced Tuesday he is a dad and pledged to give away his fortune to make the world a "better place" for baby daughter Maxima and others.

In a letter to Maxima posted on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan said they were going to give away 99 percent of their company shares -- estimated value $45 billion -- during their lives in an effort to make a happy and healthy world.

"Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children. We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can't wait to see what you bring to this world," the letter said.

Zuckerberg will "gift or otherwise direct" nearly all his shares of Facebook stock, or the after-tax proceeds of sales of shares, to further a mission of "advancing human potential and promoting equality" by means of activities for the public good, the California-based social network said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Zuckerberg "intends to retain his majority voting position in our stock for the foreseeable future," Facebook said in the SEC filing.

"As you begin the next generation of the Chan Zuckerberg family, we also begin the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to join people across the world to advance human potential and promote equality for all children in the next generation," the Facebook chief and his wife said.

"Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities."

Giving Pledge

Zuckerberg early on added his name to those who have taken a Giving Pledge to dedicate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy.

"My hat's off to Mark Zuckerberg for making a decision he'll never regret and making a difference he'll forever be remembered for," pledge-signer and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said in an online post.

"The traditional approach to giving –- leaving it to old age or death –- is falling by the wayside, as it should. Mark's decision shows that when it comes to philanthropy, 30 is the new 70."

Zuckerberg is 31 years old, while Bloomberg is 73.

Names on the pledge include Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison and IAC/InterActiveCorp powerhouse Barry Diller.

"We believe all lives have equal value, and that includes the many more people who will live in future generations than live today," Zuckerberg and Chan said in their letter to Max.

"Our society has an obligation to invest now to improve the lives of all those coming into this world, not just those already here."

Zuckerberg in November said that he and his wife are donating $20 million to help get high-speed Internet service to US classrooms.

The money is being given to nonprofit group Education Super Highway to help with its mission, the Facebook chief executive said in a post on his page at the social network.

A month earlier, Zuckerberg and his doctor wife revealed plans to start a private school in a hardscrabble Silicon Valley town, mixing education with health care.

Zuckerberg voiced pride in his wife, Priscilla, for the plan to create "The Primary School" in the working-class city of East Palo Alto.

Last year, Zuckerberg and Chan began pumping $120 million into San Francisco Bay Area schools.

More than five years ago, Zuckerberg channeled $100 million to improve schools in the New Jersey city of Newark in an early foray into improving public education that got failing grades.

"Studies show that when working parents take time to be with their newborns, outcomes are better for the children and families," Zuckerberg said in an earlier post on his Facebook page.

Beginning with the new year, dads working full-time for Facebook anywhere in the world will have the option of taking four months' paid leave.

All new dads working for Facebook outside the US currently get a minimum of four weeks' paternity leave, with more time offered in locations where required by local law, according to Facebook.

Same-sex partners who are not primary caregivers for babies get the same paid leave time as dads, the social network said.

The change, effective January 1, essentially raises parental leave time for dads and non-custodial same-sex partners from four weeks to four months.

Maternity leave offered to Facebook employees around the world is already four months, and the benefit was available to both moms and dads in the United States.

Facebook also gives a $4,000 bonus for parents to help meet the needs of new babies.

Strasbourg (France) (AFP) - The European Court of Human Rights ruled on Tuesday that Turkey had violated conventions on freedom of expression when it banned YouTube for more than two years.

An Ankara court had barred access to the video-sharing site from May 2008 to October 2010 over 10 videos deemed insulting to modern Turkey's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Strasbourg-based rights tribunal said.

"Blocking without a legal basis users' access to YouTube infringed the right to receive and impart information," it said, ruling on a case brought by three Turkish law professors.

"The court also found that there was no provision in the law allowing the domestic courts to impose a blanket blocking order on access to the Internet, and in the present case to YouTube, on account of one of its contents."

The lengthy ban on YouTube -- and thousands of other websites -- had prompted widespread concern about freedom of expression under then prime minister and now President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who critics say has become increasingly authoritarian.

Before the ban, YouTube had been the fifth most popular site in Turkey.

Erdogan and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have been repeatedly criticised for using court orders to block critical websites, topping a Google table for content removal requests.

Last year the search engine also accused Turkey of intercepting its Internet domain, redirecting users to other sites.

The government blocked Twitter and YouTube in March 2014 after they were used to spread a torrent of audio recordings implicating Erdogan -- then premier -- and his inner circle in an alleged corruption scandal.

Turkey's parliament in March also approved legislation to tighten the government's control over the Internet by allowing it to block websites without prior judicial authorisation, sparking outrage both at home and abroad and a condemnation from the country's Constitutional Court.

Erdogan has also made no secret of his disdain for social networks, comparing them to a "murderer's knife" and once famously vowing to "eradicate" Twitter.

The European court said in its ruling Tuesday that "YouTube was a single platform which enabled information of specific interest, particularly on political and social matters, to be broadcast.

"It was therefore an important source of communication and the blocking order precluded access to specific information which it was not possible to access by other means."

The Dutch privacy watchdog CPB has ordered a company which tracks the behaviour of people in shops by using their mobile phone signals to change its methods, saying they are breaking privacy legislation. 

Bluetrace has developed equipment allowing shopkeepers to monitor what people do in their stores and how long they spend where using wifi tracking technology. 

The CPB said Bluetrace is not keeping to the letter of law in the way it collates information without informing the public what it is collecting and what use the data is being put to. In addition, the company keeps information indefinitely. 

The company has now said it stores the data anonymously and is wiping the information after 48 hours. In addition, it will stop recording the movements of people who walk past shops without entering. 

The CPB said it will assess these new measures shortly to see if they conform to privacy rules. 

Among the clients listed on the Bluetrace website are snackbar chain Febo, Gouda city council, CBRE Global Investors and Ryanair.

Khartoum (AFP) - The Dutch ambassador to Sudan swam across the Nile in Khartoum on Saturday in a stunt that began as a bet to win more "likes" for her embassy's Facebook page.

Clad in an bright orange swimsuit bearing the embassy logo, Ambassador Susan Blankhart swam several hundred metres (yards) across the Blue Nile with six other Dutch women and seven Sudanese women, cheered on by dozens of supporters on the riverbank.

"It was lovely, it was beautiful. I would recommend that everyone swims across the Nile," Blankhart said laughing, back on dry land after the crossing.

She had originally said that she would swim across the river if her embassy's Facebook page received more than 10,000 likes.

After she hit the target, the 63-year-old organised the swim with two charities to raise awareness about safe swimming in the Nile.

The group was watched over by a team of Sudanese lifeguards in kayaks and boats as they swam through the muddy water.

The swim was also aimed at promoting women's empowerment in Sudan, Blankhart said.

Uber drops Uberpop taxi service in the Netherlands

Taxi app firm Uber is stopping its controversial Uberpop service in the Netherlands, the company said on Wednesday. 

Uberpop allows unlicenced drivers to use their own cars as taxis, but has been branded as illegal by the Dutch courts. 

The company is withdrawing the service because Uberpop is a ‘hindrance to the constructive dialogue about modernising the existing taxi rules’, Uber Nederland director Niek van Leeuwen said in a blog post. 

The services Uberblack, Uberlux and UberX, which involve licenced drivers, are not affected. 

Uber said earlier this year it would support Uberpop drivers in getting taxi licences, but Van Leeuwen said in his post that ‘we expect many of them will not be able to do this because of the high cost of complying with all the legal obligations’. 

Earlier this year, transport ministry inspectors raised the fine payable by Uber for breaking taxi sector rules to a maximum of €1m. Uberpop drivers themselves can be fined up to €4,200 and are given a criminal record.

London (AFP) - British fans of the US rock band Eagles of Death Metal, which was playing at a Paris concert hall targeted in Friday's attacks, have started a social media campaign to push one of its songs to number 1.

"Get Eagles Of Death Metal to the No.1 this week as a statement of support and peace," read the description of the campaign on Twitter on Monday.

A Facebook page calling on supporters to download the song "Save a Prayer", a cover of Duran Duran's hit single of the same name, had more than 6,500 "likes".

Campaign organisers said that the downloads would be "a nice gesture" and stressed they were not representing the band, who escaped unharmed, and their initiative was not being done for profit.

The song is at number 96 in Britain's charts and climbing, with a new ranking set to be released later on Monday ahead of the official ranking on Friday.

The campaign "has started gathering momentum," the Official Charts Company said in a statement.

The song is already at number three on the Amazon UK singles chart and number 1 on the iTunes rock chart.

It was at number 35 on the main iTunes chart.

Gunmen attacked an Eagles of Death Metal gig at the Bataclan in Paris on Friday, gunning down fans and blowing themselves up as police stormed the building.

The attack claimed 89 lives -- by far the worst loss of life of the night.

The band, which was formed in 1998 in Palm Desert, California, was celebrating the October release of their album "Zipper Down" with a European tour.

The band's previous highest UK single's chart position was number 73 with 2006 record "I Want You So Hard (Boy's Bad News)".

The video featured Josh Homme -- frontman of Queens of the Stone Age -- along with former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl and Hollywood comic actor Jack Black, all of whom have made live cameos with the band.

Messages about the campaign were being retweeted on the official account of the British band Duran Duran.

It was unclear who would receive the royalties from the increased sales of the single.

Hannah Herbst wants to bring renewable energy to the developing world.

The 15-year-old from Boca Raton, Florida, won this year's Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for designing a probe to generate power and fresh water for developing countries by harvesting it from ocean currents.

She was awarded $25,000 and the title of "America's Top Young Scientist" at a competition at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Herbst told Business Insider she was inspired by her 9-year-old pen pal in Ethiopia who has limited access to electricity. "I cant even imagine a day without electricity," said Herbst.

How the device works

Herbst's energy probe is made of recycled materials and costs just $12.

It consists of a 3D-printed propeller, connected by a pulley inside a plastic PVC pipe to a hydroelectric generator, which converts the mechanical movement of ocean currents to usable electricity. She tested her device in the Boca Raton Intracoastal Waterway, where the current coming in from the Altantic Ocean produces a large amount of untapped energy.

Using her device, she was able to power a set of LED lights.

She calculated that if her design were scaled up, she could generate enough electricity to charge three car batteries at once in less than an hour. That's enough energy to power saltwater desalinization pumps to provide a source of fresh water for developing countries. It could also power blood centrifuges for medical use, or coastal beacons for ship navigation.

The competitors

Herbst was one of nine finalists.

Over the past three months, each of them was paired with a 3M scientist as part of a summer mentoring program to take their inventions from design to prototype.

Herbst worked with 3M corporate scientist Jeffrey Emslander, whose research has helped the company reduce its emissions and produce its products using less energy. Here they are accepting the award:

The competition's second place prize went to Raghav Ganesh, an eighth grader from San Jose, California, for an invention that monitors physiological and environmental factors that can trigger meltdowns in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Third place went to Amulya Garimella, a seventh grader from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who created a system that monitors EEG brainwaves and alerts the user when he or she is distracted.

Iris Gupta, a seventh grader from North Potomac, Maryland, won fourth place for her project to stop allergies at their source by inhalation or injection of nanoparticles that block particles that trigger allergies.

As for Herbst, she plans to donate some of her winnings to her Ethiopian pen pal, and a new building at her school. The rest will go into her college fund, she said.

She also plans to keep working with her 3M mentor to improve her ocean energy device, and eventually deploy it in developing countries.

This benevolent Universe gave you an astral body that allows the waters in your ocean to push and pull and push on the most regular schedule of anything you know of. Laptop makers are making it harder to swap batteries: Consumentenbond

More laptop makers are making it difficult or impossible for users to replace the battery themselves, the Dutch consumers association Consumentenbond said on Friday. 

Five years ago, it was consumers were able to change batteries in 77% of laptops but this has now shrunk to 42%, the association says in a new report. 

In total, researchers checked out 600 different laptops to find out how easy it is to swap batteries. Apple came bottom of the bunch, scoring just three out of 10. Top was Lenovo with a score of 9.6, followed by Toshiba on 8.6. 

The association says a new battery costs between €40 and €80 but replacement by the manufacturer or a repair company costs up to €200.

New York (AFP) - Adele on Monday shattered a record with her long-awaited song "Hello," which became the first track downloaded more than one million times in a week in the United States.

"Hello," a piano ballad that is the debut single from the British pop star's first album in nearly five years, opened at number one for the week through Thursday on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, which monitors sales, streaming and radio play.

For digital sales only, "Hello" was downloaded 1.1 million times, far outpacing the previous record holder, rapper Flo Rida's New Wave-sampling "Right Round" which sold 636,000 copies in a week in early 2009, tracking service Nielsen Music said.

"Hello" also broke by a wide margin the feat for streaming. The song was played 20.4 million times via on-demand subscription services, more than twice the record set two months ago by Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber for "What Do You Mean?"

Music industry watchers are expecting Adele's upcoming album "25," which comes out on November 20, to be the year's biggest release and say it may even rival Taylor Swift's blockbuster "1989" album from last year.

Adele's last album "21," which featured the heartache song "Someone Like You," was the top-seller in the United States for two years in a row and the biggest album by a comfortable margin in Britain in the 21st century.

Adele is planning to promote the album in the United States with a recorded-for-television concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall and an appearance on "Saturday Night Live."

"Hello" has amassed nearly 200 million views on YouTube, becoming the fastest video to hit the 100 million mark with the exception of "Gentlemen" by South Korean pop singer Psy, his follow-up to the most-viewed-ever YouTube clip "Gangnam Style."
