Authorities
in Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning province confirmed on Wednesday the
completion of the city's largest 3D laser printer, reports the People's Daily,
the mouthpiece of the Communist Party of China.
The machine
is currently the world's largest 3D laser printer with a maximum processing
size of 1.8 meters and was co-developed by the Dalian University of Technology
and Dalian Science and Technology Development. The printer is able to produce
large industrial samples as well as complex molds and encompasses unique
technology called contour line scan, which reduces the processing time by 35%
and manufacturing costs by 40% compared to its counterparts.
Designed
and produced by professor Yao Shan and his team from Dalian University of
Technology, the 3D printer is considered to be the driving force of the
"Third Industrial Revolution," the paper said, adding that other
countries have only been able to create small desktop 3D printers that are
unable to manufacture large industrial parts in short periods of time and at a
cheap rate. For this reason, the printer is a tremendous breakthrough in the 3D
printing field by tackling numerous difficulties and challenges, Yao said.
He added
that the new type of 3D printer is able to produce industrial parts 5-15 times
faster than the current printers available around the world, and it can also
copy one tonne of an industrial part for less than 1,000 yuan (US$160). The 3D
printer in Dalian has already gained two national invention patents, the
People's Daily said.
