The era of
personal computers has past.
The sooner
the local information technology industry realizes this and adapts accordingly,
the better it will be for that sector, an executive of a local electronics
company said Monday.
Speaking at
a conference of investors, Gemteck Technology president Chen Hung-wen predicted
that the global business slump will continue for quite a while as the economic
stimulus programs in various countries have not spurred a strong recovery thus
far.
Taiwan's
information technology industry, one of the pillars of the country's economy,
is taking the brunt of the global slump, he said.
In
particular, the export-oriented personal computer business is faltering and is
losing its significance in the mobile telecom industry, said Chen, whose
company provides wireless broadband solutions.
The
miserable situation of many local dynamic random access memory makers has
resulted from their failure to transform themselves from makers of PC
components to mobile telecom providers, he said.
He urged
Taiwan's information technology industry to undertake transformation and grab
the new opportunities arising from the mobile telecom industry.
